Emergency Shelter

Embracing Vulnerability with a Low Barrier Approach

The Emergency Shelter in Burnaby isn’t just an ordinary shelter; it’s a beacon of hope for those in dire circumstances. Recognizing the urgency of shelter for those without a home, this place offers immediate protection and support.

What truly sets the Emergency Shelter apart is its “low barrier” approach. Unlike other shelters that may have strict requirements, the Emergency Shelter extends a compassionate hand. We support even to the most vulnerable populations who have trouble finding support.

The staff and volunteers at the shelter understand that many of their clients come with complex issues and challenges. They make it their mission to ensure that accessing services is as straightforward as possible. Instead of placing more barriers or hurdles, they meet individuals where they are, providing help without judgment or additional demands.

The housing-first approach isn’t just a buzzword here; it’s a core philosophy. They prioritize getting people into stable, permanent housing as quickly as possible. This builds on the core Housing First belief that a home is the foundation for rebuilding lives.

This program is indeed one-of-a-kind in Burnaby, a pioneering effort that distinguishes it from others in the area. When it opened its doors in the fall of 2019, it marked a significant milestone as the first shelter of its kind in Burnaby. It symbolizes not just a place to stay for a night, but a pathway to a brighter future for those who walk through its doors.
