ERC Community BBQ

On June 9, 2023, the Progressive Housing Society, in a meaningful collaboration with the City of Burnaby, hosted a community BBQ at the Emergency Response Centre (ERC). This event, a testament to community spirit and cooperation, was significantly highlighted by the attendance of Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. His speech eloquently addressed the community’s unified goal to transition individuals from temporary shelters to permanent, stable housing, emphasizing the importance of these efforts in addressing poverty and homelessness.

The event also featured insights from our Executive Director, Jaye Treit, who shed light on the resilience and determination that have characterized the ERC’s journey. Triet detailed the challenges faced during the pandemic, the adaptive solutions provided, and the critical role of partnerships with the City of Burnaby, RCMP, and Progressive Housing staff in supporting the ERC’s operation beyond its initial timeframe. This collaborative effort has been crucial in providing a safe haven for its residents amidst uncertainty.

The BBQ was a celebration of the journey so far and the anticipation of moving to a new building slated for the fall of 2023. This move signifies a significant step forward in our ongoing mission to improve living conditions and overall well-being for our community members.

Mayor Hurley and Jaye Triet’s remarks highlighted the power of collective action and the impact of community support in facing societal challenges. The event itself — an occasion of good food, good music, and fellowship — showcased the strong bonds within our community and the shared commitment to making a positive difference.

We are grateful to Mayor Mike Hurley, City of Burnaby staff, and all who took part in making the ERC community BBQ a moment of connection and hope. As we eagerly await the upcoming transition and the restoration of the recreational center to the community, this event serves as a reminder of what we can achieve together for the well-being and support of all community members.
