Emergency Shelter Opening

On August 19, 2019, the Progressive Housing Society achieved a significant milestone for Burnaby by opening its first emergency shelter. This event marked a critical step forward in addressing the city’s homelessness crisis, with many eager clients arriving to take their first steps into a space designed for comfort and security. Anticipation filled the atmosphere as individuals eagerly looked forward to accessing a resource that promised them a new beginning.

The shelter operates 24/7, ready to welcome new clients from 10 am to 10 pm every day. Its primary focus is on providing housing solutions, and it’s open to individuals over the age of 19, offering a space that respects and celebrates diversity in gender and ethnicity. One of the more progressive aspects of the shelter is its pet-friendly policy, allowing clients to bring their pets along with them. This policy acknowledges the importance of these companions in people’s lives, ensuring no one has to part with their pets in seeking shelter.

Accessibility is a cornerstone of the shelter’s operation, demonstrated by its no-referral policy. Anyone in need can either call or simply stop by to check for available beds, a policy that streamlines getting help and emphasizes the shelter’s commitment to providing immediate support.

By September 3, 2019, the shelter had quickly reached its full capacity of 40 beds, proving the need for such a facility. This swift uptake not only highlighted the shelter’s success in meeting an urgent community need, but also spotlighted the broader issue of homelessness in Burnaby.

Through its efforts, the Progressive Housing Society’s Emergency Shelter has made a tangible difference in the lives of many. By offering a reliable place to stay and a chance to rebuild, the shelter contributes significantly to the local response to homelessness. It stands as a practical example of how dedicated support and community services can directly impact and improve the lives of individuals facing difficult circumstances.
