Join us for a virtual tour of one of the independent living suites in Progressive Housing Society’s newly-opened Holly House. Spanning two mirror-image homes built side by side, Holly House provides independent living for a total of four people and assisted living for 10.
The bottom level of each home features a self-contained, fully furnished two-bedroom suite for clients who are ready for independent living. If residents would like any support, it is available to them from staff working in the Progressive Housing Society office of the assisted living program on the upper floors.
Each independent living suite is designed to set residents up for success, with convenient bike storage, fully-equipped kitchens and laundry, convenient bathrooms and private bedrooms. The common living room features a smart TV and residents also have wifi internet access. Guided by interior designer and artist Carley Rangen, the decor reflects the natural beauty of the west coast through style, colour and art, including original pieces by Indigenous artist Anthony Joseph and nature-inspired works by Carley Rangen.
Holly House is built on property in Burnaby’s Edmonds neighbourhood that Progressive Housing Society has owned for more than 45 years. Originally, there was a single-family home on the lot, which had capacity for us to provide housing and mental health supports for five clients at a time.
With the demand for housing increasing, we decided to redevelop the land and create purpose-built spaces that optimize our ability to help more clients and in a way that best supports their varying needs. Over the course of the five-year process, we worked closely with Ma’kola Development Services, NSDA Architects and Western Canadian Properties Group to bring our vision to life. With the opening of Holly House, PHS has nearly tripled the number of people we can serve on the property.
