2019 Tax Clinic

Filing taxes can be a huge source of stress and anxiety for many. The process may seem confusing or overwhelming and people are afraid to make mistakes. Some people don’t even feel that it’s worth filing if they fall into a low tax bracket but this is actually even more of a reason to file. People in lower tax brackets can become eligible for certain rebates and benefit from certain programs (such as child tax credits, old age security, etc). It can help people receive extra support from the government. It’s also important to file because some government agencies require tax information to be up to date before a person can access specific services.

In order to help those struggling with filing, the Canadian Revenue Agency has a program that supports individual volunteers and organizations to help.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) program is a partnership between the Canadian Revenue Agency and volunteer agencies. The program helps the organizations open tax clinics that assist people in filing their taxes. Each year Progressive Housing participates in the program and runs a tax clinic for our clients. We had a super successful tax clinic this year. Our staff was able to help 179 clients file their returns!

Our efforts contributed to the national strategy that helped 703,400 Canadians file for 2018.
